Last week-end, I finally went to the "Piton des Neiges", the top of the island, 3070 metres high. Because of the buses, we had to use the longest and most difficult path to reach it. We started from Salazie. So, during two days, we walked for hours !
Departure Saturday, 6.30 AM from my place. We used four buses to go. Arriving on Saint-André bus station, we worried : buses on strike ! I would have been so disappointed if it had been impossible to go ! Pfew, we managed to find a bus !
Oups...
Then the hike starts, and we climb, and climb, and climb, and climb... At one moment, Isabelle asked, showing a mountain : "do we have to go until there".
Me : "well, we are going to the top of the island so, everything which is higher than us, we have to go !"
Ooops...
Oh non, un hérisson mort !
Oh no ! A dead hedgehog !
Quand on s'arrête, le froid commence à se faire sentir...
When we stop, we now feel the cold...
Et on monte encore... C'est interminable...
And we are still climbing... It is as if it would never end.
Help ! A horrible Cyclops ! (oops no, it's just me, I broke my sunglasses).
I let them go for a while in order to appreciate the silence. This makes me think about a song called Silence must be heard.
We finally arrive to the first stage ! We'll start walking again the day after, at 4.30 AM, in order to reach the top before the Sun rises ! The shelter was full, so we decided to build our tents in a cave, in order to be a little bit protected by the cold... We were the only crazy people to do it, people looked at us in a strange way... "Will they really sleep in this cave ?"
Bienvenue chez nous ! Le confort suprême à portée de main !
Welcome in our new home ! Total comfort !
It was so cold ! While everybody was inside, we were outside, in the dark and the cold, eating our canned food... It's so frustrating to see through the glass of a window people eating in a warm place, when you are freezing outside ! The owners of the house asked us to leave when they started to serve the meal...
Julien told Arnaud : "you're not eating a lot !"
Julien : "I can't."
Arnaud : "Why ?"
Julien : "because to eat, I have to put my hands out of my jacket".
Fortunately, a friend who wasn't here lent me his jacket !
After our meal, we occupied the corridor of the shelter. It was dark, you can't see it on the pic because of the flashlight of the camera. We seem to be laughing, but seriously, it was not that funny.
We customized our cave ! We even added our ID at the entrance ! We started to laugh without being able to stop, I don't know why. I think it was our nerves... On top of that, the cold
Julien said, after his head knocked of the ceiling of the cave : "now I understand why theprehistoric people used to live bent !"
Yes, this video is bad, I just publish it for my own remembrances.
At the beginning of the night, a person sleeping in the shelter came to tell us that 3 beds were free... The three boys were real gentlemen and let us go !
The day after, I went to the Piton des Neiges with the three boys. The two other girls stayed to sleep, and this was morally difficult for me and got me down. Me too, I was tired, but I wanted so much to go to the top ! I believe that in this kind of things, will is as important as your physical abilities. It's my will which helped me not to feel too tired.
I also was very lucky. My credit card was in my camera's bag, and it fell down. I didn't notice it. Then I heard somebody scream in the dark, behind me : "is their a miss S........ here ?". I thought : "who knows my family name in this lost place ?". A guy just found my credit card ! I was lucky because : in the dark I don't know how he noticed it ; he was honest ; and he was not far from me !
Le jour commence à se lever...
The Sun is slowly coming...
Quel paysage !
We arrived just ten minutes before the Sun ! :D It was worth to do it, no regrets ! The landscape was amazing.
I had to put a "I was there" picture. The Piton des Neiges is something that has to be earned !
La preuve qu'il faisait froid !
An evidence of the cold temperature !
"May I have a cup of tea please ?" dit-elle avec le petit doigt levé...
After these four hours walk, we are back to the shelter. We wanted a tea, but there were no cup. Anyway, at that point we were real prehistoric people.:D May I have a cup of tea please ?
After (only
We got our bus ! Then, we had to wait two hours for the second one. Anyway, each time we had to wait for a bus, we just rested, anywhere...
The day after, back to work in order to have a rest. Hem... They probably wondered why I walked in such a strange way...
To conclude, I am happy and proud to have gone to the Piton des Neiges using this way, even if the evening in the cold as well as the way back was painful. It will be anyway a nice remembrance.
