We are still Saturday, 3rd May. We went to see the last lava streams issued from the Volcano. It was very beautiful and impressing. By looking at the landscape, it was easy to imagine how it was when the Piton de la Fournaise was erupting. Some of these lava streams are recent, the last one has been in April 2007. It seems to happen quite often, as this Volcano is one of the most active in the world (but not the most dangerous) !
On the pictures below, we can see that the lava streams have ended in the Indian Ocean, destroying a road at the same time (which has been built again afterwards). It has been a godsense for scientists, because it revealed new fishes species, which had never been discovered before !

It's very hot down here !

Alors, on se promène ? / So you're having a walk ?

« Alors, on se promène ? »

Here, when guys try to chat up a girl, they almost all do it on the same way. They have a fetish sentence :
“So you’re having a walk ?”
The three quarters of them just say exactly the same thing. So innovative ! I hope, at least, that they don’t think they are original. Perhaps, they all bought the same handbook : “how to pick up a girl on the Reunion island ?” ? Perhaps they learnt it by heart ? Then, they just declaim it when they meet a girl.

Last day, one of them even used the wonderful phrase “So you’re having a walk ?” while I was buying food in a supermarket. Yes. I think I did not answer, I just thought very loudly : "no, when I’m going out for a walk, I do not go in a crowded big supermarket, I choose a better place”.
OK, if they are really keen on that sentence, why not ? But they could try to adapt it to the context. For example, concerning the situation above, he could have said : “so you’re buying food ?”. And I would have thought : “No no no, I’m not, I’m picking up daisy flowers”.

Miam miam !

Wednesday 9th April, I went all day long in the field. I had to visit the coastal path, in order to try to imagine which kind of touristic events it would be possible to organize. At lunch-time, I had the opportunity to assist to an event animated by the tourist information board of the North of the Réunion Island (I know, it’s a long name). The title of this animation is “Creole tastes”. The aim of it is to learn how to cook cari, the local plate. I wasn’t there during the preparation, when I arrived, it was just ready to eat ! ;o) I thus joined a tourists’ group. But don’t mix everything ! I was there to work ! Yes ! I was “studying a touristic product”. ;o) I say that because “I see you coming”, you all, with your insinuations !

At the end, some cari was still uneaten, so they gave me a big portion of it. I looked very “clever” when I came back at work with food in my arms. They gave me so much cari that I still have some to eat for three days ! But as it’s very good, I’m never tired about it !

We ate with our hands, in banana trees’ leaves.

Below, this is manioc with sugar. It was the first time I tasted it. As a dessert, it’s very good. The texture is a bit similar to marrons glacés. Of course, I also got a little box of it ! My work colleagues are very nice, aren’t they ?

The 29th and 30th March, we went to the Mafate Circus, to go to the village called “La Nouvelle”. There, the Réunion Island was promoting its application for the Unesco World Heritage Site. Furthermore, a stamp of Mafate has been created, and many philatelists were there because it was the first edition, stamped in the Mafate Circus.
Because of these events, there were many entertainments and concerts. We slept in Mafate in order to enjoy the evening.

C'est parti !
Let's go !

The village can not be reached using roads, because, rightly, there are no roads. Helicopters are used in order to supply the population with food and other stuffs. Because of that, there were many helicopters coming all day long.

We slept in tents. Because of the events, there were many people. During the night, some of them drank a lot… Rum and Dodo !
During the night, a stupid guy came and vomitted just next to our tent! During two hours, he vomited by jerk, and he was so close, I heard him breath just on the other side of the canvas. I was so disgusted! I was also feeling cold (yes it’s possible, even here!), because it was very damp. But except during the night, I had a great time in Mafate.

Yasmina at the end of the walk, in her thoughts... "So we went down there..."

I will come back in Mafate, in order to use other paths to go there, and in order to enjoy nature and silence.

L'accueil réunionnais / A warm welcome and nice unhabitants

Salut !

Sympa ! Toutes ces personnes qui me prêtent du mobilier me rendent de grands services, car ça m’évite d’investir dans des choses dont je devrai me débarrasser ensuite !

Prochain objectif ? Soyons fous !

Hi! Good news are coming! I now have water, electricity (since yesterday), and even a mattress to sleep! This is luxury!

There’s something I love on this island. It’s the warm welcome and the kindness of the people from Réunion. They are helpful, smiling… It’s very pleasant, especially when you arrive, alone in an unknown place 10 000 kilometres away from home. It’s not difficult to become integrated down here. I had some problems at the beginning, and so many people proposed to help me, in a totally disinterested way! I now have many people to contact in case I need help, and even if I won’t use it except if I have big problems, it’s very reassuring to know there are people I can count on, just in case !

The accommodation I found has no furniture. Some colleagues from my work brought me today a fridge and a microwave, which they will lend to me for four months. Sébastien lent me a mattress and a TV (it’s not working but it should will very soon). So nice! This is very helpful, because it would have been a shame to buy stuffs I would have had to get rid on later on!

Next objective? To buy a table and a chair! And, why not, a little piece of furniture to put my things in in the bathroom. Let’s be crazy!
