Radio Freedom is THE local radio. I don’t know any equivalent. People from the Réunion island call to speak about their problems, what they liked or disliked… A woman once called because she had found a Bible extract in front of her door and she was scared. Some others called to ask what is the weather like on the opposite side of the island. Some others to inform about road accidents. Some others because they lost their wallet, their dog, or because their car has been stolen. Examples like these ones, there are plenty.
And it works ! A real solidarity network has emerged thanks to this radio, and calling Freedom in case of problem seems to be the best way to solve it. I know somebody who found back her car just because she called Freedom and described it. Some minutes later, a woman called, telling that she could see a car like this from her window… And it was the right one !
Many people here call Radio Freedom before warning the police, and according to some of them, this radio is more efficient than the police. Policemen and policewomen listen to it in order to be aware. It happened that a guy who kidnapped a child was caught because listeners trailed him and regularly called Radio Freedom. The other side of the coin is that the people who commit wrongdoings also listen to this radio, so they know if they are followed…
In short, it can sometimes be annoying if you listen to Radio Freedom all day long, but it’s a really good mean to discover the local culture, and the problems the people from Réunion have ! We also realize how much people are helpful here.
Radio Freedom, it’s news in live, from the population to the population.
And on the evening, oh !, on the evening… On the evening, there’s a programm called "Chaleur Tropicale" (=tropical heat). And it’s sometimes very funny. Ah ha ha, some are very naughty ! ;o)
If you understand French and Créole, you can listen to it here, it's worth to !
